Thermodynamics English 4 Essay/Study
Below is a short reflection which was assigned in the English 4 humanities class. For this section of the school year we studied Thomas Pynchon and his literature and ideas. This was a response to one of the interesting stories that he wrote which is called Entropy.
Social Thermodynamics
In the short story “Entropy,” Thomas Pynchon writes about the 2nd theory of thermodynamics but uses examples pertaining to social gatherings and social everyday situations. He uses some interesting language like civil disorder and ecological balance to represent the chaos in everyday life and situations that is needed. The story takes place in the 40th hour of an ongoing party that a man named Meatball and his friends have put on. The author uses the phrases “sidereal element” and “reassuring array of varied temperatures” to represent the 3rd person view of thermodynamics and can be applied to the social gathering and everything they say. Some of their ideas pertain to the overall adding tension that is growing throughout the room and sometimes their lack of caring for it. One of the ideas, instead of helping the party to calm down and relax, was to instead just hide in the closet and hope everyone just stopped fighting and went away. All in all, the party itself was at its lowest point at the beginning after everyone had been worn out and I would imagine that the people who end the party would be most likely to represent the loss of energy in everything. Instead they resemble this with a dying bird that another who philosophizes about the meaning of thermodynamics and paranoia of the constant temperature of 37 degrees.
